2016 Fall Instructional League

DSL names that we have not heard of are potentially the most interesting. The new international class invites are Francisco Morales, Juan Aparicio, Brayan Gonzalez, Nicolas Torres, and Jose Tortolero. And our first Greg Pickett sighting in a while.

So of the 6 reported 7/2 signings all but SS Luigi Mujica are on the FIL roster. Looks like deep group but I think they always do. Pretty much all of the big guys from last year's International Class (Ortiz, Marchan, Silva, Guzman, Bocio) there too and the former Red Sox (Muzzioti).

Every signed draft pick through the 16th Round (Barbier) except for one (Cole Stobbe, SS, 3rd Round) which struck me as a pretty curious omission.

thanks for this andy. i was going to start a thread this morning, after i saw the White Sox had listed their instructs roster in BA. i was wondering when we'd see the phillies roster. but you beat me to it. i don't see up to the 20 new latins as Jimmy S. had said the phils had signed. What gives?

If they are not going to be ready for GCL next year I think they stay in the Dominican for the Fall and Winter. In Venezuela I assume they will still have the Liga Paralela which is the Venezuelan winter rookie league:

There is also a Dominican instructional league but I have never seen the stats on the Internet. This does not mean all of the new 16-year-olds and the DSL players will play in GCL or higher next year. But more than half of them will and if anyone is going to make their stateside debut next season they are likely to be on this roster.

I figured that had to be an error or he had a prior commitment. There is no way the Phillies weren't going to include Stobbe.

Does the FIL Phillies team play out of the Complex in Clearwater? For guys who played in ST, XST, GCL and now FIL, the Carpenter Complex must feel like home now!

62 on the FIL roster, 34 are internationals. I'm guessing it might be a first for more than half of the players being internationals. Just guessing, though.

BTW, FIL home games are in Brighthouse (with one exception for a scheduling conflict).

I think if a LA player doesn't get invited to FIL, he's a long shot to be on the GCL roster.
They seem to stash a lot of pitchers in the DSL/VSL for 2-3 years before bringing them over, this may reflect a lot of "gambles" on kids with frames that could fill out.

Games have started BTW. On Twitter today's highlight was Cornelius Randolph who threw a runner out at the plate and also hit a 3-run HR.

Pitching and defense are spotty, but Greg Pickett hits a 2-run HR. Gowdy had one good inning but trouble in his second. Tirado gave up 5 unearned runs and Medina gave up a couple of HR.

The Yankees are pretty good in the lower minors so this is a decent test for the Phillies. They have 4 short season teams (NY Penn, Appy, 2 GCL) to handle all the high dollar international players they signed a couple of years ago.

I don't read much into FIL performances, it's almost certain that they're working on skills in games.
Same with pitcher velocities, except for lack of velocity, since these are short stints, velocity tends to be exaggerated.
You really don't know how these kids are progressing until they're assigned to leagues next spring.

I think this is a universal understanding. It pretty much indicates that in the name of the league.

Stopped in to see the Florida Instructional League yesterday. I specifically wanted to see Mooniac and pick up a schedule. I couldn't find one any where and learned that Mooniac had been shipped back to Philly with some kind of injury. I am going to try to get a schedule from one of the offices at Bright House tomorrow.

The Phils were playing the Blue Jays. There was a surprising number of spectators there. The parking lot at the Carpenter Complex was near full with a great diversity of license plates. When I got to the field, the bleachers were full of scouts, radar guns and clipboards every where I didn't stay long as I was due to meet some friends for lunch at Frenchy's Rockaway on the beach.

Gowdy took a hard ground ball off his pitching hand/arm and had to leave the game. Looks worse than it was apparently (video of it included). Jordan also said Moniak is OK.

Gowdy injury not serious, but it looks like Encarnacion continues his awful season with a broken foot. Assume this costs him Dominican instructional league at bats though he'll be fine by Spring Training.

Best news is that both Appel and Nola apparently look very good and healthy.

If Nola is truly 100%, figure Eflin will be fine (probably a lot better given he's had problem with those knees for years), Velasquez, Eickhoff, that's a pretty good core.
Thompson, Morgan, Asher fight it out for #5.
If Hellickson accepts his QO, Lehigh will have a heck of a rotation!
