It will be interesting to see how the administration, and our allies, deal with this situation. It's a real challenge. It will also be interesting - I guess - to see the extent to which our domestic politics gets all silly over whatever the administration does, or does not do.
For now, my reaction to early responses: As I noted yesterday, I think that Secretary Kerry's comments yesterday morning were not well-considered, in that they left the USA open to international ridicule, given our own recent international behavior (Iraq, widespread drone attacks, etc.). On the other hand, I found the statement that the G7 released - to the effect that preparations for a G8 meeting in Sochi are on hold, sending the message that there will be no G8 meeting on Russian soil (and likely no G8 meeting at all, but rather a G7) unless this is resolved - to be just about the right message; e.g., you cannot do this and expect to be treated as a partner in "business as usual." Washington certainly had a hand in crafting this message.
