Good Lord, why would you want Hendry? What you want is to get MacPhail out of the way, not hire another one of his proteges/cronies. And to get someone like Neander, yes, you'd have to give him MacPhail's job.
But Hendry (or Dombrowski) would fit the bill as someone who isn't truly going to overhaul the organization though, or threaten MacPhail. Try to get this team over the hump for the next 2-3 years as Gillick did, and then move on. Or who knows, maybe they can hire someone with the promise of promoting them to MacPhail's job in a year or two.
It's hilarious that they claim he stepped down in paragraph one and then say it is mutual agreement in paragraph 3. It can't really be both, and doesn't seem to be either. If he'd quit, he'd be leaving the organization without pay. If it was mutual they should give him a buyout and let him move on. Instead it seems he will keep his full salary and be forced to stay as an advisor in order to get his money. I assume he'll end up as another team's Assistant GM at some point (or maybe go back to MLB).
All the assistant GMs are under contract for another two years as well so wouldn't be surprising if at least 1 of them stays. Rice was the Balitmore guy of course (so was Proefrock but we already had him).
Someone has to do all the paperwork and coordinate the development staff and instructional league but hopefully they get a hire before the non-tender period starts. Rice is not likely to be the guy signing JT. And COVID still complicates things. Even if you put Gillick in charge of the search, he's in Detroit.
