Okay, I honestly can't give an honest assessment yet on the Sixers post trade deadline, but here are my initial thoughts...
The trades:
The Sixers traded Ersan Ilyasova to the Hawks for Tiago Splitter, a 2017 second round pick (Miami) and a 2017 2nd round pick swap (the will send the Hawks Golden State's 2nd round pick for the Hawks 2nd round pick)
I think this trade was actually a win for the Sixers. Saric's improvement made Ilyasova expendable. They obviously made the decision that they were not going to re-sign Ilyasova (who is an unrestricted free agent). Splitter will never play for the Sixers, his deal ends after this year, but he helps them get to the salary floor. His contract counts against the cap, but insurance is paying for his contract, so they save the money. If you look at the two trades, the one that brough Ilyasova here and the one that sent him to the Hawks, it basically works out to the Sixers trading Jerami Grant for 50+ games of Ilyasova, a 2020 first round pick, a 2017 second round pick and an improvement of an existing 2017 2nd round pick with a swap. That's really good in the long run.
Sixers traded Nerlens Noel to the Mavericks for Justin Anderson, Andrew Bogut and a 2017 conditional 1st round pick.
Well, I can't really give a complete assessment of the trade, simply because the big question is how is Anderson going to be? The trade actually got the Sixers to the salary floor, so that settles that. The conditions on the first round pick essentially means the the pick will not convey in 2017, and instead will become a pair of second round picks (Dallas' 2017 and 2018). Obviously, the Sixers understood that Noel was going to get signed to a lucrative offer sheet, and even though they would have the right to match the deal, Noel's future here was going to be as a backup center. Embid will have to be paid soon, and if they retained Noel, they would have a ton of money in the center position, it just didn't make sense. Bogut will be bought out, not sure how much if any the Sixers will pay, Dallas may pay the buyout as part of the trade, we'll soon find out. If Anderson pans out as a solid D and 3 player, then the trade looks a bit better, but my gut reaction is that it was not a good trade.
As for the trade they didn't make, Okafor remains on the roster. Okafor, at least, is under team control for the next couple years, and is still very young, so maybe he will continue to improve his game and will be a solid player. At least for the rest of this season, Embid is going to miss enough games that Okafor will get some serious playing time.
Now we just have to see how the rest of the season plays out. What will be the result of today's test on Simmons foot? How far will the Kings plummet in the standings? Will the Lakers get bumped out of the 3rd spot and will the Sixers end up with two lottery picks? This coming offseason will be crucial to the Sixers going forward.
