I actually like what Briere has done, but what's the deal with Frost's contract? Just trade him if you don't want to pay him. The media is trying to spin that he's reached his max production is laughable.

Frost can't win in either scenario. He likely won't get the premium minutes to showcase his skills or he would be taking a lowball offer.

He should probably ask for a trade.

But what does that really mean? Is Russia really honoring this stuff? He's also suspended until the end of the year but no meaningful national team play between now and then i wouldn't think.

The Russian Hockey Federation in a statement said it would provide full support if CSKA decides to appeal.

The KHL said it would only comment after taking time to study the ruling, in a statement reported by Russian news agencies.

The bigger question of course is does Fedotov want to come here/was he basically coerced into that contract.

And the next question would be how does this affect Michkov in the long run.

I admire Frost for gambling on himself and for thinking that a coach and front office more grounded in reality and Less in emotional feuds will value him more 2 years from now.

I think bridge deals are right for all of our RFA’s. It’s not like any of them are proven top line players. Maybe some will become that, but they aren’t there yet.

The front office certainly isn't going to change in two years. I imagine Tortorella will also be a member of it by then (if he doesn't finish his four-year contract he'll probably shift to advisor, and beyond that period too). But maybe things will play out differently once the new regime has a year under its built (much like the Phillies the last two times).

It's probably a bigger gamble for the Flyers than the players, barring injury. It means another Sanheim-like deal (or a much fatter short-term deal and then potentially losing him as a UFA) if they do want to keep him. But tying up long-term money makes little sense right now.

I know that the plan is to evaluate young players and hopefully make some progress, but is this the worst Flyers roster since the early 70s? I honestly wonder if they will manage to win 20.

Coots is certain to be traded once he proves he can stay on the ice. I assume Hart is not far behind as the prime of his career is going to be wasted if he stays.

The fact that it is opening night for the league and if has been how many days (a month plus) since anyone had a comment on this team. No discussion of who did or didn’t make the team. Allison was waived, no one commented. This franchise may be at its lowest point since it was formed.

I would have to disagree, it would be far worse if they'd signed some better players! This part is overdue. If they are as bad as you think they might be (or as aggressive at the deadline as you predict), even better.

It's pretty funny though (IIRC) that we were debating whether Allison should be traded or considered a building block not that long ago.

I guess I am missing what you disagree with, I think we are in agreement just phrased differently. Is this the worst roster you have seen for this franchise? You seem to say that it might be, and it is good that it isn’t any better (yes, draft pick). This build (it isn’t a rebuild, there was no re-) was actually not thought of 2-3 years ago, we thought we had a young core coming up. Unfortunately the vast majority of those young players fell apart, now we have a few of them and “new” young players. Remember when 3 years ago we all talked about how by this time we would have too many young defensemen by now? (We were going to have to release all the veterans because we had something like 9 defenseman that were 1-2 years away). Now… well, hopefully a couple of the remnants can do something.

Yes, last year this should have happened instead of the “retool”, which even at the time was clearly a joke.

Yeah I guess we are not really in disagreement. I'm just not sure this team is actually worse than last year's team (which won 31 games). And I definitely don't think it's bad enough to get one of the top three lottery spots. They didn't trade Hart (or Sanheim), they got rid of their worst d-man (D'Angelo), Coots and Atkinson are back, the coaching staff should be more locked in, and Torts' teams usually play hard. I certainly don't want to see them accidentally falling out of the lottery or making the playoffs. But as a fan, the combination of seeing how some of these young players do and hoping some other players establish high trade value is enough to hold my interest, such as it is.

i.e. maybe I'll buy a couple of tickets for below face, and I'll start watching games on TV in January. Because I could care less right now, the Phillies are in the playoffs! I think that's probably the main reason nobody is talking about the Flyers here. And of course they are fourth fiddle behind the Eagles and the Sixers too. That would be true even if things were better (though not for me, I'd pick hockey over the NFL and NBA if all else was equal).

i was disappointed that the flyers didn't claim Lassi Thomson either time that he was waived and didn't claim Bernard-Docker. Sens waived two young former first round defenders because they have depth - aren't those the chances the flyers should take a flyer on?

If no one claimed them, scouts all over the league are down on them.

Problem with the Flyers is they were allergic to the concept of rebuilding, Holmgren had a great opportunity after the Carter-Richards trades, Hextall started a rebuild, then basically stopped, after trading Kimmo and Coburn at the 2014 TDL, pretty much only minor transactions until the Schenn deal in the summer of 2017, then blows the cap room on 29 year old JVR. Flecher was hired with a 'win now' mandate by Holmgren, and after the Giroux trade, instead of trading Risto and Sanheim and start a rebuild, extended Risto and traded FOR TDA.

Briere is the first Flyer GM who has actually used the word "rebuild" out loud.

But people expect a NJ/Buffalo/Chicago tank, he's already has Michkov, Gauthier and Bonk in the pipeline, (2) 1sts and (2) 2nds in the 2024 draft, so he probably wants to see the current roster in action before taking his next steps. If the young players like Brink, Foerster and Andrae are for real, the process is accelerated, if they fall short (or some other young players regress) it's fire sale time.

Lassi Thomson was claimed by the Ducks who had priority over the Flyers Oct 1. The Ducks waived him a week later and he was reclaimed by the Senators on Oct 9. It does not look like the flyers even submitted a claim either time.

I am not so sure we can expect a whole lot from Atkinson and Coots. If they do not return to form, we could very well have a top 3 pick.
