Has to be your own, and it would be 2026. So, they would either not have one next year or it's a reason to trade either the EDM or COL pick into that year so they still have one after they lose their own.

If you're giving up a first for an RFA you sure better also make the playoffs.

According to AFP Analytics, a Rossi extension would be as follows: 2X $4,546,482 or 7X$7,389,790. The money isn't the only thing here. Additionally would be the loss of DCs and players to acquire the rights to Rossi. At that price he's a pretty expensive guy for a player that Minnesota had as a bottom six center.

Well yes, that is the conundrum. You are not getting him if you don't see him as your 2C. But Minnesota depressed his trade value and signaled their own likely unwillingness to match a big enough offer by demoting him.

You can if you trade for his rights rather than sign him to an offer sheet

I don't think Briere will be interested in Rossi.

He likes bigger centers, he seems to be OK with smaller wingers but wants them to have 'true grit,' like a certain player who excelled in the playoffs.

Flyers are one of the smallest teams in the NHL, I don't think Briere wants to get any smaller, and Rossi isn't an elite offensive talent. He's a solid player, but not one you break the bank over.

Again...this idea that you only go for ELITE talent is bad management and now how you build a roster. NHL teams do not trade elite talent.

A low first and a third are not ELITE assets.

Even at a shade under 8 million a year he's not even in the top 30 highest paid centers.

You are giving an above average center an average-ish salary and the return is also what you'd pay for that type of player.

It's a bit of a click-baitish article but the leafs implosion in game 7 could really work out well for the Flyers with that 2027 pick.

One detail the article leaves out is the 2027 pick being top-10 protected. So, upside for Flyers does have some limitations. But still a good trade, seemingly!

Briere is grossly underrated by Flyer fans. He's patient and extracts maximum value.

Provorov and (Peterson salary) for 1st, (2) 2nds, Walker and Grans.
Walker & 5th and (Johanson salary) for 1st
Farabee & Frost for 2nd (#48), 3rd in 2027 (Kuz trade), Pelletier
Laughton 4th and (2027 6th) for 2027 1st, Grebenkin

Laughton has 32.27 xGF% in playoffs, awful performance, he's not a scorer, but he should "win" his minutes as a bottom six center. He's basically a replacement level player at best.

Pelletier who is two years younger outplayed Farabee.
Below average size, average speed, but non-stop motor, more Briere's type.
Frost is 4 months younger than Poehling, and Evolving Hockey has them pretty much the same value.
So don't be surprised if they use the money it would have cost to extend Frost to extend Poehling.

Walker was OK for Colorado in the 2023-24 playoffs, then signed a 5 year deal with Carolina as their 3rd pair RHD, paired with Ghost.

Grebenkin has top 6 upside, still inconsistent, but has size (6'2 209) and small forward skills (agile footwork, plus passer). Started in the KHL at 19, was 21 this past season (turned 22 in May). Probably start next season in AHL, but will push for a job in camp.

A total collapse by the Leafs is unlikely as long as they have Matthews, Nylander, Reilly, etc.
What is more likely is a slid into mediocrity, followed by a sell-off.

One small criticism i might have on the trades is that briere pulled the trigger on the frost / farabee deal early and it ended up being a sellers market. He probably could have gotten better value at the deadline, but who is complaining?

I think Farabee was just a tough asset to move.

I also don't think the Leafs have any regrets about Laughton. Sometimes guys just have a bad playoffs, and he was not acquired to score.

He'll still be there next year, and Leafs will still be spending and going for it one way or another. If they let Shanny go they're still not going to change GM or coach soon soon.

But would be fortunate if they just miss the playoffs by 2027.

I think Flyer fans overrated their value.

Farabee hasn't been the same since his neck injury, whether he can't add strength or is subconsciously wary of injury, he plays soft, average speed, good IQ, but not a forechecker or a good offensive forward anymore.

Frost's performance was inflated by playing with TK, Tippett and Atkinson (when he scored 20 goals), on CBJ, playing with 3rd liners, he didn't look very good. Torts got him to improve his defense, but he's too passive on offense, disappears for long stretches of play and doesn't drive play. A 3C, behind Couts and Cates and soon to be behind Jett.

Briere was weeding out players who didn't fit the style he wanted from the Flyers (see FLA, Carolina) and wanted to shed Farabee's contract and didn't want to give Frost an extension. Notice how quickly he flipped Kuz instead of trying to extend, both his style of play and age didn't fit.

The leafs are getting ready to lose Matthews and maybe a couple of others.

everything i have read is that the leafs have some decisions to make, have a lot of important free agents and cannot afford to keep them all. UFAs include John Tavares and Mitch Marner (who are at the top of many free agent lists) & RFAs include Matthew Knies.

You are thinking of Marner, who is almost certainly gone but that also gives them a ton of money to spend on replacing him. They also have to decide whether to bring back Taveras. Matthews is signed through '27-'28 and has a no-trade clause. Nylander (who is still not 30) is signed through '32.

They might not be as good next year but they were one of the two best teams in the East (playoff disappointment aside), the fall down is likely to lesser playoff team, not lottery.

They are probably going to cut loose Shanahan after 11 years but I can't see them changing GMs or going into rebuild mode.
