I actually think all this is independent of Ovi. They probably know the number that he will sign for, but they kind of realize he is more of a 3rd line winger and power play specialist at this point. He is more important in the locker room than on the ice. This is just the Caps moving on for the future. They will happily welcome Ovi back, but they don't really need him back.

I said they're in win now mode, because in two years their top scoring forwards will mostly be over 30.
While one or two will continue to produce, a few will probably fall off.
Which is why I also pointed out they'll need a number of young forwards to step up.

However, the Flyers, who have only been rebuilding for 3 years (spun their wheels for a decade "reloading") finished ahead of the Caps last season and most of those draft picks haven't arrived (only 3 Briere picks are in the NHL, Michkov, Barkey and Martone, though more will arrive the next two seasons).

Caps have made some good moves, Thompson, the Protas boys, Hutson's little brother.
But not enough in the system to compensate if their top guys fade in a couple seasons.

I can't read this draft.
Briere has his two way centers, his big D-men (mostly RHD), his physical wings.
So he might go speed and skill, but who knows how the draft board will unfold.
The small skilled D-men have questions, the big D-men have question and so on.

Just don't see anyone that jumps out and says that's a perfect fit.

And they have 3 (not 2 - you need to read your own posts sometimes) for younger players like Leonard and Hutson and Cristall and both Protas brothers to step up and get better. Yes several players will regress. But yes it is likely several will improve too.

That is what happens when you have a relatively young roster NOT filled with older stars with long contracts other than Tuch. As I said, your point is nonsensical. The system was ranked 11th in the last set of Athletic rankings and they have not traded anything more than their 7th best prospect. That is not the type of team that will necessarily fade.

It does seem the point where the Flyers need to consolidate some younger assets and turn them into mid-career veteran players. The trick is picking which young players to keep and which to deal of course.

That's really where you have to hope your talent evaluators are worth the money they're being paid. the flyers have the assets, they have the money and I think this is the next critical stage.

They seem pretty good at this at the pro level so far. Zegras, Dvorak (regardless of what you think of his contract) and Glendenning were all savvy pick-ups. Frost and Brink don't feel like big losses even if Viricek doesn't turn out to be a jackpot. And of course Vladar exceeded all expectations, not sure anyone but him gets credit for that but we'll take it.

I just want to end up the day with a draft pick (i) that the non-Flyers consensus experts says was an appropriate pick at 21 (and maybe even a value); (ii) who wasn't picked because he's big rather than good at actual hockey; and (iii) isn't picked because he is related to a former Flyer. Probably too much to ask from Brent Flahr.

I am thinking we see a defenseman drafted. The draft is deep at D, we've only drafted one D in the first round in the past five years - it makes too much sense. I wouldn't be surprised if we drafted one in the first and in the second.

I think you could probably say that Drysdale was drafted in the 1st in the last 5 years even though he wasn't.

I kind of agree about the draft being deep at D, but I think it's maybe a little top heavy and will only leave a few options at #21.

But I haven't been able to follow much this year, so that is just a guess.

I think I would be fine with someone like Adam Novotný.

All of the defensemen at #21 will be old. Might as well go with Roobroeck and swing for the fences

Ryan Lin fell to the Flyers at 21 but since he is not big enough they traded out of the pick
