Every club in the League knows what assets the Flyers have to move. The question becomes whether or not Briere is willing to move them. IMO, the organization is starting to put together the base for a competitive club. Moving out premium players such as Michkov, Martone, Foerster and the like or that Toronto #1 DC, in order to obtain a thirty year old center who has had his career peak makes little sense. Better to move out lesser assets for a younger player.

Can you name any young 1Cs that could be available?

There aren't any...it's just setting the bar high enough to say "no" to most offers.

1st or 2nd C's don't become available on a regular basis.

To acquire one now...they will be older and expensive and cost significant assets.

The way forward to make the next step will not come through waiting on draft picks.

The only ones I can think of are on the Kraken in Beniers and Wright, not sure if either is a true 1C, but both are age appropriate for the Flyers rebuild.

The Flyers can't wait for any of their non-pros to turn into a 1C, but they can definitely wait one more year for the next round of trade targets, maybe two. By then McDavid and Matthews will also be FAs (regardless unless they are traded and extended).

A puck-moving d-man is probably the bigger short-term need. Though certainly the fact that Larkin is a PP-experienced C is also part of his appeal.

Get ready to be shocked by the $ figures involved inZegras's contract and Vladar's extension too, though hopefully Vladar's won't be too long.

When Briere started, I figured you were looking at a 5 year rebuild, given how many years they wasted spinning their wheels and losing talent.
Just b/c they had a better season than expected is no reason to force the issue, "trust the process."
If they move Risto & Seeler, they could go into next summer with cap room, a better idea who is a keeper and 2-3 1sts, (2) 2nds, (2-3) 3rds. With Jett, Knuble, Bonk, Murchison, Gill NHL ready or close to it, Nesbitt going pro and maybe Berglund coming over, they would have a lot of assets to target a center/LHD in their desired age range.

It is a five year rebuild, but that doesn't mean you do nothing in years 3 or 4. You're just not all-in yet, rightly.

Briere did astonishingly well last year with a buy-low distressed asset in Zegras and two depth pieces that wound up being so much more. We'll see what his next trick is (and he also got a distressed asset in Viricek).

Is there an issue with trading Tippett? The PP was bad last year and he's one of a few that can play on the point on the PP. I know he doesn't always play that position, but he definitely can.

I think Tippett just comes up first because he's a little older and more expensive (and doesn't have a no-trade like TK). Also it's really just spillover from when he was thought to be available at other times.

At the end of the day there are guys you don't want to trade and guys you might be happier to trade but someone from category one surely has be in any deal for a quality C (ditto any Top 4 d-man who's a PP guy).

It would not surprise me if Briere does very little. It also wouldn't surprise if he trades someone more unthinkable.

Anaheim’s Mactavish is supposedly available. I’d take him for the price before what it would cost to get Larkin. Maybe Tippett or Konecny and Ristolainen could get it done?
Mactavish, Zegras, Dvorak and Barkey or Cates down the middle isn’t great but it’s not shabby. Watch Bergland challenge for a spot. The kid is going to be a player.

I'm not giving a lot for McTavish.

At least with Zegras you can look at dysfunctional coaching and injuries and see the upside.
McTavish regressed with Q and is a subpar defender who has scored at a 3C level.
Right now he's not as good as Cates or Dvorak, and maybe not as good as Barkey.

I would have to do deep research to find out why a kid with this much talent sucks on a regular basis.

I think that’s actually a fair take. I certainly have not watched McTavish closely.

Does anyone really know what kind of player Mactavish is? He was the third pick in the 2021 draft so he must have some ability. He's been in the Ducks system where talent is developed at a worse pace than here in Philly. When he didn't immediately blossom into an all star after getting a six year at seven million dollars per contract, he was kicked to the curb in favor of the new favorites in town-Gauthier, Beckett Sennecke, Carlsson. etc. Maybe he is a stiff but maybe he is a guy who was mismanaged and has become a scapegoat where people are looking for reasons to dump on him. IMO, he's worth a look.

McTavish is an interesting player...going back to the ducks feels kind of weird since they seem to be where we go for "change of scenery" guys.

I think he's probably a guy you trade a second and another lower pick and maybe a player for.

This is what it seems the asking price is for a 1C who is young...not sure that was ever a serious conversation.

Yeah, that was what they wanted in March. But also, right: that's not so much a market-setting ask as the ask of a team that didn't really want or need to trade the player. Also not that unreasonably an ask! Just too rich for the Flyers right now. Larkin will be less because of his age and ability to control where he wants to play.
