The Flyers have traded Ryan Ellis and a conditional 6th round 2026 pick to the Sharks for forward Carl Grundstrom and defenseman Artem Guryev. Grundstrom was waived in the hopes of getting him to the Phantoms.

This is about clearing out Ellis' money, they can only use it by putting him on LTIR, but that means they can't accrue cap room going into the TDL. Now they start the season with $7M, accrue all season unless they take on a bad contract or two, and can be a player at the TDL. The league has changed the PO cap rules, so top teams can't game the system like Vegas did on a regular basis - if they want to activate players off the IR, they have to find cap room.

You also can't do double retention deals anymore, so only with the team you're trading with.
Briere can eat 50% on a number of players and/or eat a bad contract in return, so he's now positioned to be a player at the TDL.

I am starting to think AF's preference is not wrong inasmuch as there just aren't many stars hitting free agency or the trade market anymore. Rantanan was an exception last year.

hunting elite players in FA or on the trade market is a fools errand...now...if you can build from within a strong foundation, you can go after an aging star and overpay to get over the hump...

Sounds good for now. Can they send him back to the AHL for “conditioning” a couple of times? That seems to be a loophole which would let him play with the Phantoms for a few games, at least.

Which defensemen got the axe to LV? I didn’t see that, either.

Zamula deserves to get sent down based on preseason camp, but I bet he’ll stay.

Ah. well, that only forestalls the inevitable. He needs to play the NHL games and get ice time to actually stick around, time in the AHL won't tell them anything.

Doesn’t that mean if misses time due to injury and does his rehab assignment in the AHL

Jett will get a few games to gauge his progress, if he shows he can handle NHL play, he can start on a 4th line with Dvorak/Grebenking/Abols and Hathaway and PK, play 10-12 minutes a night. If he progresses, gradually increase his workload and responsibilities - there's no rush this season. If he looks lost, send him back, he'll be top six in WJC-20 and since Guelph is unlikely to make the POS, be with LHV by April, in time for the AHL playoffs.

They may also be pressuring Guelph to trade him or lose him for nothing, b/c they see Guelph as a wasted season in terms of development, if he was traded to say London or Windsor they'd probably feel more comfortable sending him back to the OHL.

Too bad the Flyers missed out on the changes to the game with Luchanko. They are one year too early to be allowed to send him to the AHL and one year too late for him to play NCAA (since they burned his eligibility last year).

Luchanko is not so good that he would not benefit from another year in CHL hockey. Guelph may be a bad team buy so is his offense.
