Why is that? Ranked 239 by BA. 461 by Prospects Live. Drafted a little bit late, but what am I missing that suggests he would have significant overslot bonus demands? Maybe he gets a little more but his college stats are pretty pedestrian. Even the slot for 239 is only $182K and that is his higher ranking.

They can still pay Wimmer 250k if they wanted right? They said that's the expected bonus size for where he was ranked so it doesn't seem impossible to sign him now. I do wonder if they could have signed a few HS kids with the 650k that went to boyd, they must really have liked something.

This is where we see if the new regime has improved scouting. The possible downside is that Boyd is what Baseball America used to describe as a 'typical Phillies first-round pick'. They loved speed and athleticism and just assumed that the baseball skills like hitting (and even fielding) would develop. They never did develop. Later round OFs did better than these athletic first-round stretches. Brown and Altherr didn't make it, but they came closer than many of our first-round attempts with speedy athletes and batting-practice-power guys. The good news: Boyd isn't a first-round pick. $600K isn't a huge bonus. He is already at least able to play good CF defense. He is actually faster than guys like Hewitt were. He's a good gamble for an 11th round pick. He will also test our development staff and the ability of the scouting and development side to work together. I think he's a better gamble at 11 than Quinn was at 2. I like the pick and the signing. I expected seriously over slot but didn't expect quite this much over. Still ok with it.

Yes, if they've finally figured out you gamble on athleticism outside the first 5 or 6 rounds, that's a huge improvement. Since the odds against an 11th rd pick ever making to the Show are slim and none, why not gamble on upside?

An 11th-round pick is special, because of MLB's rule requiring that picks 4-10 actually be signed in order to get to use the bonus money allocated for that spot (rounds 1-3 are different, because you get a make-up pick that's almost as good in next draft). So H.S. guys for which you don't want to pay round 1-2 money to and which you aren't absolutely positive will sign and not play games with you, aren't drafted in rounds 4 - 10. In many ways, the 11th round pick is often a higher valued guy than the round 4-6 guy. Now, since we are drafting in middle of pack, other teams didn't consider Boyd to be a super 11th-round possibility. Phillies always over slot round 11. The Phillies gave Boyd 3rd-round money, something they've also done in the past.

I would guess this is correct - e.g., Rincon got ~ $175k, and that means Wimmer and Karaffa will be offered $125,000 or less. Karaffa will likely sign for that - the alternative is a senior season at OSU, and a $20k bonus next summer. Wimmer has two years of eligibility remaining, so a decent season at South Carolina could get him into the top ten rounds next summer. I'd guess he does not sign.

Of course, my guesses plus about a buck will get you some coffee at Wawa!

I still think it is better than 50-50 he signs. The Phillies did leak that they expected to sign everyone. Wimmer just hit .312 as a 21-year-old in college. He is more an athlete than a baseball player and I am not sure he could play his way into a much higher bonus. Doesn't every college junior essentially have 2 years of eligibility left because of COVID? It does not seem to be increasing bonuses and adding leverage for these lower level prospects.

Wimmer might have wanted $200K. But I imagine there are a bunch of college prospects that wanted $200K but eventually took $125K because MLB had all the leverage and they wanted to start their pro career now.

Baseball America has now updated signing bonuses for all 17 of the Phils' signed draftees. I've updated the table in the top post.

Note that for several players, there are minor discrepancies between the bonuses reported by BA (Chris Collazo) and MLB (Jim Callis or Jonathan Mayo). For consistency, where one of the reported bonuses excluded the $2,500 accounting gimmick, and the other did not, I've opted to show the lower bonus amount (because most of the undisputed bonuses have pretty obviously excluded this $2,500). But there's no guarantee that this is correct.

Still not a lot of information on bonuses paid to UDFA, but it looks like they haven't exceeded $125k on any of them.

About $50k available to sweeten a contract for Braylen Wimmer.
