Renteria has a long swing but seemed to handle velocity well and hit to all fields. The next challenge is to see how he handles good sliders off the plate.

Prieto turns 19 next month but if it weren’t for Renteria and Ramirez his offensive performance would be the best we’ve seen in the DSL from the Phils in a long time.

ESPN has our organizational ranking down to 28th after our graduations, Miller's injury,, and the deadline trades.

Keith Law likes Gage Wood's new splitter:

Wood needed a new pitch? Aren’t splitters associated with arm problems? oh well, let’s see how it develops I guess. We probably shouldn’t worry about more than 5 years down the road, anyway, with how contracts work these days.

mdougherty12 2026-09-10 23:14:12 UTC #1309

It sounds like the splitter is replacing his change-up, which wasn't performing well. Law seems to think that Wood should ditch his curve, too. Wood needed something to throw to lefty hitters; he's had significant platoon splits this season.

Matt_Winkelman 2026-09-11 01:06:00 UTC #1310

That is an old scout take from 30 years ago that has been disproven. They have always been common in Asia and have regained popularity domestically and are thrown by many prominent players (including Wheeler). They are another option depending on how an arm works and spin capacity and things, so Painter moved from a split back to a circle change because the shape wasn’t right and was interfering with other pitch grips. For the way Wood throws, a split tends to make more sense.

Wood has also been throwing the split at least back to the Futures Game, though after his promotion from Clearwater. He is throwing it more, but Law is wrong about it being new. It also is labeled and talked about as a changeup on broadcasts.

Does he have a 2 seamer? That's a pretty effective pitch against LH if it has some horizontal movement away from the LH hitter along with sink. Used to be Nola's bread and butter pitch in his younger days.

Matt_Winkelman 2026-09-11 05:43:32 UTC #1312

Sinkers are bad against opposite handed hitters, this has been proven time and time again. That run away only works from an elevated 4-seam fastball shape. That said, Wood’s 4-seam does have armside run, but the actual effectiveness is that he has fine rise, but really he gets low and flat with his delivery thanks to height, arm angle, and extension which gives it a low angle and makes it a plus plus pitch.

Bryan Rincon moves into the MLB.com Top 100

phillychuck 2026-09-15 15:15:39 UTC #1314

Just barely. But still there. I think he’ll get Eastern League MVP votes.

andyb 2026-09-18 17:37:56 UTC #1315

Rincon has risen to this site's top 100 as well (and their 3rd place star of the week).

EDmuch 2026-09-18 19:10:47 UTC #1316

I predict (hope) that both Miller and Rincon are part of the 2028 starting infield.

Austinfan 2026-09-18 19:12:53 UTC #1317

Rincon takes a lot of pressure off Miller next year.
2027 Lehigh?
C Ricketts (27), Hettiger (23)
1B Anthony (26)
2B Miller (23)
SS Rincon (22)
3B DeMartini (24)
LF Reyes (26)
CF Nori (22)
RF Heredia (23)
[Escobar repeats AA]

SP Wood (23), Bowker (23),
RP Pan (25), Graves (23), Jimenez (25)

Still thin on pitching, but that's a pretty solid lineup of prospects.

phillychuck 2026-09-18 19:30:54 UTC #1318

They will sign AAAA vets for pitching. I’d expect Miller at 3B and DeMartini to move to 2B for the better prospect. Miller is too big for 2B and has a long-armed throw. That will hinder his ability to make the pivot at 2B I think, anyway.

andyb 2026-09-18 19:53:55 UTC #1319

Nori likely to repeat AA as well.

Miller I would say is 50-50 for the major league roster if Arizona goes well. He was going to be up in July this year if he was healthy. He is just a different level of talent than anyone else on that list.

Final season reviews from Matt:

andyb 2026-10-07 16:57:35 UTC #1321

I can't remember if we would have an offseason minor league thread in addition to the winter ball thread, so I will put Matt's final monthly piece in here too.
