Fangraphs issued its "Top-48" prospects list for Tampa Bay this week, and our old friend Curtis Mead is #1, according to them. He put up a 1.250 OPS in a half-season in AA, and nearly matched it in a month at AAA last year. Give credit to the Rays who saw him as valuable when he was in rookie ball, and shame on the Phils for not seeing his potential. He's really still a bit lost on defense, but he hits like a young Mike Trout.

Mead is very good. Not Mike Trout good though. A reference to Evan Longoria in the piece sounds a little closer. Trout had 80 speed and like 70 power though.

I do wonder where he will end up like anybody else. If the Phillies still had them we would be saying he has no place in LF with Schwarber and Castellanos and that he is as bad defensively at 3B as Bohm (maybe even worse). I can't imagine we would have NOT decided to sign Trea Turner (thinking a Stott at SS and Mead at 2B lineup was our future).

In Phillies world, assuming we could have developed his hit tool like Tampa (yes that is a big assumption), I think we trade him like we traded O'Hoppe for something else we need. Of course we got a major league starter for O'Hoppe.....

Painter only 13th. Abel 77. Looks like he is factoring in the injury risk for younger pitchers in his rankings.

Why does his crystal ball say #10. Eury Pérez, RHP, Miami Marlins,Age: 20 | 6-8 | 220 pounds Bats: Right | Throws: Right, is any less an injury risk than Painter?

There is not much difference between 10 and 13 on a list. Law downgrades all young pitchers because of risk. At least he explains that he does so.

Anything that Law writes about the Phillies should be ignored. IDK did he try to get a job with them in the past and get rejected? I never have seen him write anything positive about the club.

How does that splitter have a 1500 rpm spin rate? It looked like a knucklemball its spin was so slow....

It doesn't, the average ML splitter is 1500 RPM, his averaged 1000 RPM.

Splitter, changeup, call it what you will, as long as it breaks like a screwball (was a screwball actually a changeup?) and he is deceptive enough that hitters can't see it coming, it's a key pitch for a RH pitcher, especially against LH hitters.

No Caba. With the signing period moved to January I decided not to rank new international signees. I don't have any new or personal information to contribute, nor have they performed in a recent venue where information could be gathered. He certainly has the pre-signing reports to be in this area, but I just don't feel comfortable slapping a number next to his name and calling it my work.

Top 100 lists coming fast and furious this week. Today its ESPN. Painter 10 and Abel 46. Rojas among the 29 prospects who just missed.

That is 2 lists in a row with Rojas mentioned and McGarry not. In that range of a ranking there are clearly going to be areas of disagreement, but it is nice to see more support for Rojas on some sites. I do wonder if the new stolen base rules make many prospects like Rojas more valuable.

Certainly a solid take. Unless we have info from Phils' personnel on Caba it's fair to wait.

Good list as usual, Matt. There are a lot of potential breakouts in the 19-50 range--it's on the Phils to shepherd some of them through to next year's top 10.
