Good government is boring, as it should be.
In the age of fake news (and MSNBC in its non-stop moral outrage is as fake in its own way as Fox), there are few objective voices pointing out actual accomplishments, failures and limitation.
Biden's biggest mis-step was kowtowing to the Progressives, who are limited to 15% or so of the vote (40% of Democrats, who are 40% of voters, with almost zero support outside the Democratic party), which basically makes them a fringe political movement, much like the far Right, with some safe House seats that allows a few progressive politicans to grandstand. This created a perception that he was far more liberal than he actually was, an old time corporate moderate who was a long-time Senator used to cutting deals to get things done.
The reality is that the center of American politics is moderates who are" slightly right of center," and while the loudest partisans get most of the media attention, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, most Americans are most comfortable with the sort of incremental change and modest agenda associated with that group.
To get things done in this country, you need to put together a 60+% movement which is immune to backtracking - gay marriage happened b/c public opinion hit a critical mass of 70% or so, and at that point, only a few outliers continued that battle. To build that sort of movement, you need to tone down the rhetoric, make politics personal, and don't stigmatize those who are uncomfortable with change to the point that they reflexively oppose change.
One reason Biden's effective is his instincts are toward that middle ground, he generally stays way from "rights" rhetoric or talking in absolutes, and is willing to compromise and accept half a loaf. Which while I consider him a mediocre thinker, he's the right man for this time, lowering passions and focusing on getting things done. And that often means holding your nose - immigration reform may require committing to stricter asylum rules, something akin to a "wall," a national ID card in return for DACA, etc. The national ID could then be used to supersede state attempts to create voting restrictions by making it a requirement for voter IDs. Any compromise that could pass the House will be hated by the Left and the Right.
