Well, I understand your points here, allentown, but there are differences here, and a problem.
Richard Nixon's crimes were not - not remotely - equivalent to Donald Trump's. Richard Nixon did not attempt to subvert the Constitution, to overturn an election, to foment insurrection. (I'm shaking my head in disbelief here; I never dreamed that I would be arguing in a way that could be seen as in favor of Tricky Dick!)
Richard Nixon's crimes were well known to Richard Nixon, and Richard Nixon was capable of feeling shame. Richard Nixon went off to San Clemente and dropped out of public activity, out of Republican politics. Richard Nixon's children went about their lives quietly and with dignity.
Donald Trump? Donald Trump is incapable of shame or of remorse. Even if we assume that he's capable of understanding his crimes, he continues to deny any culpability. Even if Trump "pleads guilty" in a court of law, as you say, allentown - do we have any reason to believe that he wouldn't recant that guilty plea on "Truth Social," or in some other public forum, a week or two later? That he wouldn't make up some further story about how he was wronged, even in a court where he pled guilty?
Donald Trump is running for president. Donald Trump is endorsing other candidates. Donald Trump is issuing daily statements on social media - daily lies, to be blunt. Donald Trump's offspring (predominantly Don Jr., and Eric's wife Lara) are issuing public statements justifying Donald Trump's criminality. Donald Trump is continuing to raise political money for his PAC, on the basis of bald-faced lies.
Allentown writes, "Trump is out of office; he needs to stay out of office; he needs to pay all taxes owed." That would be nice, but it is not enough.
First of all, it's not happening. He's still engaged in politics; he's running for president. But beyond that, Donald Trump still has the megaphone. As long as Donald Trump has the megaphone, there will not be anything approaching national healing.
Allentown says "I'm not out for blood." Well, neither am I. But I do want - no, I demand - Donald Trump's permanent political silence. If Donald Trump were convicted (or pleaded guilty), and then went to live a quiet, private life at Mar-A-Lago, and his family withdrew from public life and pronouncements... yeah, that would be enough.
But that is a pipe dream. Donald Trump will not shut up, will not abandon social media, will not forego public appearances, unless he is compelled to do so. Convict him, sentence him to permanent house arrest, with no public statements, appearances, or social media posts permitted. If he violates those terms, he's relocated to a controlled facility, where his behavior can be compelled.
But pardon him? Turn him loose to continue to poison our nation and society? I don't think so.
