Agreed, as stated there was a group of Republicans (mostly older and establishment) that stood up to Trump, but they have never stood up to their party and the mendacious ideas the party dictates and cultivates.
Why? Because they believe in what the party dictates and cultivates and actively support it. The Jan 6th exception was a blip on the screen - great, they are against open insurrection by a dicator-wanna be and white supremacists. Cool. But they are fine with the policies and ideas those same folks espouse on a daily basis.
It is the same line many Republicans use when they state they disagree with Trump's "behavior", "language" or "Twitter usage", but still strongly support the ideas, policies and actions implemented. They just wish Trump would shut up and not call so much attention to their pursuit of culture war and christian nationalist goals.
If they just had a better messenger, things would be so much easier and smoother for them and the party. Pence, DeSantis, Cotton and all the rest are lining up to be that "better messenger" in 2024. They will do and say whatever is necessary to get that role just like they did to help Trump and the party take our country to the brink of disaster previously.
Bill Barr just last week has launched a new "election integrity" group with Karl Rove. Yup, you guessed it, it is a transparent attempt to fund and consolidate resources toward more voter suppression on the local & state levels. Not to mention what he did as AG before he resigned with the Mueller report, Stone & Flynn cases and undermining the DOJ/FBI with the flimsy Durham "investigation" that has wasted tax money and led to little smoke and no fire.
Same with Raffensberger in GA - sure he refused to illegally overthrow an election in his state and has cooperated with the various investigations - but soon after the election he pushed the legislature to pass an "election integrity" bill widely panned around the country and still supports all the other Republican lies. I would not be surprised to see him campaigning with Herschel Walker soon.
Bill Stepien, of famed Team Normal status, continues to work as campaign manager or advisor for multiple candidates who promote the Big Lie.
The Claremont Institute not only still has John Eastman on their board, but publicly stands behind his ideas.
Pat Cipollone, who finally came forward to testify about Jan 6th, also was the guy who ran Trump's Ukraine impeachment defense team and embarrassed himself with the linguistic and legal gymnastics he performed to mislead and misdirect what we know was shameful and possibly illegal conduct. As Jared Kushner said, Pat threatened to resign so many times it became a joke yet Pat never did anything to warn the country about what he saw or supposedly fought against.
And what did Rusty Bowers get for his integrity and courage from his party? The AZ party cult voted to censure him. How was Chris Stirewalt rewarded for making the right call that Biden won AZ on election night? He was fired by Fox for daring to make the Republican party and Trump look like they may lose.
Pence is no different. He was a culture war governor of IN who pandered to evangelicals and the religious right. Remember, he is the guy who stated he would never be in a room alone with any woman or attend any event with alcohol if his wife is not there.
Also study Pence's stint as VP - absolute sycophant is not even a strong enough term to define his actions, words and behavior in that role. He values loyalty just like Trump does and is a true believer in many scary ideas every American should worry about. He should be no where near the oval office or executive branch ever again IMO. Again, the fact his actions on Jan 6th were in such direct conflict with everything else he had done as VP should give us pause. Sure, thank him for his service, but understand these are no heroes.
