You are not alone in this. But we'll get a clear signal, one way or the other, in November. If the electorate decides that gas prices are more important than the Constitution (which is what is at issue here)... well, the electorate will abandon the Constitution. They likely won't get the gas prices they want... but children often make foolish choices, and wind up without what they wanted anyway.
Am I being condescending here, characterizing the behavior of the American electorate (or a large chunk of it) as childish? Yes, I am. Do I believe that a large swath of Americans is willfully ignorant, basically selfish, and likely to consign our nation to authoritarianism, out of ignorance, greed, or just plain stupidity? Yes, I do.
Prove me wrong, and I'll acknowledge that I was wrong... but I'm not holding my breath.
