The electoral college/Senate shifts over time, the West is going Democratic, as Montana shifts from energy to tourism as its main industry, and more eco-immigrants move there, it won't surprise me in a decade if only Wyoming, Idaho and Utah are Republican. Iowa has gotten more conservative, Georgia, NC more Democrat, Virginia solidly Democrat, Florida is always in play, and Texas is slowly turning purple. The monolithic mountain states and Deep south are a thing of the past.
We're not a Democracy, we're a Republic, and the Founding Fathers built in these checks and balances deliberately because they were essentially conservative and suspicious of government power - and Trump has done his best to prove their fear of the mob to be well founded. But note it is the states and courts that have thwarted Trump.
