Jose Rodriguez had a 1 calendar year gambling suspension that ended yesterday and apparently he has been welcomed back to the complex. Played 2B and a little SS for Reading last year. I guess the Phillies still consider him a marginal prospect when releasing him would probably have been easier.

They were suspended for betting on baseball. Now their teams are welcoming them...

The Phillies have 10 days to evaluate Rodriguez before making a decision about whether to keep him. From the Athletic article andyb linked:

MLB and the Players Association agreed to a special carve-out, according to a league source, that allowed the players back into their teams’ facilities 30 days before the expiration of their suspension.

After June 5, the teams then have 10 days to decide whether to offer a contract to the players or non-tender them. The teams also have 30 days after June 5 to place the players on a roster, including a minor league affiliate. However, teams could use the development list to extend the ramp-up period.

At the time of the suspension, Rodriguez was on the 40-man roster, on optional assignment to AA. For the last year, he's been on the ineligible list; I don't know whether he would need to go back on the 40-man, or alternatively clear waivers in order to be assigned to a minor league roster outright.

After reviewing the ML Rules, it seems that, if the Phillies offer Rodriguez a contract, they will have to add him to the 40-man roster. Rule 2(c)(8)(D) states:

Upon reinstatement, the Major League Club to which the player is reserved shall restore the player to the same status that the player had at the time when the player retired or became ineligible.

Rodriguez was on optional assignment. At the start of 2024, he had two options remaining. Fangraphs, at least, says that as of now, he has only one option remaining, so the Phils could tender him a contract, then option him back to the minors for 2025.

Rodriguez spent 8 days on the White Sox' active roster in 2023. He appeared in one game - apparently as a pinch runner (he scored one run, but had no plate appearances). He turned 24 a couple of weeks ago.

Roster looks to be 39 now and we have not yet had to move Chace to the 60-day IL.

So we have room and maybe they will let him play a couple of weeks before making it decision. Not that he is likely to be claimed by anyone though. And really he would be behind Kemp and Arroyo if we needed an infielder anyway.

And re-signed to a minor league deal now. Will start at Clearwater and move to Reading or LHV at some point. It was a low level gambling violation so I guess the organization is hoping he is just a dumb kid that will learn from a mistake. Probably like Keaton Anthony too.
