Phillies Acquire RHP Jhoan Duran from Twins for Abel, Tait

Apparently he has quite the entrance. Wonder if the Phillies will do this. It looks more involved than any other entrance music they have.

I hope they do. It gets pretty raucous in there now, so much so that the crowd has gotten a well-deserved (good) reputation for it.

If they start doing this, I can't imagine what it will be like in CBP during Red October when he walks out. The foundation might sway. He might throw 110 off the adrenaline.

I'd rather go back ro 2022 when Topper was more willing to go closer and other reliever roles by committee instead having them set in stone.

We've tried the set closer approach with Kimbrel and Estevez the last 2 years and now we know Duran will only pitch in that role.

Hope it works this time, but color me skeptical.

Tait is not four years away, he's holding his own in high A at 18, Probably start there next season, finish in AA ball.
Could be in the Show by 2027 if he continues to progress, 2028 is a good bet, that's 3 years at age 21.

Already has plus power, could fill out and grow into plus plus power, even if he can't catch full time, unless he's a total slug, has the arm for RF, maybe even look at him at 3B. He has a chance to be special, who else in the Phillies system has elite hitter as their ceiling?

The one prospect I didn't want to lose.

The problem is the Phillies aren't trading from a farm system surplus to contend now without eating their seed corn - they're already well over thresholds, maybe Crawford can start next year, maybe Miller in 2 years, Escobar in 3 years - that's your only projectable starters in the farm system. Why Anthony isn't playing LF is beyond me, unless they plan to let Schwarber walk.

On Tait he probably is 4 years away if you want him to catch. That part of his game is just going to take longer than the offense. Trading him was more about risk though. There is a significant risk he does not develop at all. I recall you hated trading Bergolla last year too for Banks. He is having the same zero power year in AA at a really young age that he had last year at High A. Without power he just is not going to project to be a good major leaguer.

Got to try them, It's like Kemp not playing OF at Lehigh, even though it was obvious it was his best bet to make the team as a platoon OF - can't predict Bohm getting injured.

It is not just a matter of trying somebody. Kemp has at least average speed. Anthony doesn't. Maybe they'll try him at some point in the future but it might be closer to Hoskins or Howard out there than what you are imagining. The Phillies can see Anthony's tools.. They'll try it at some point if they think he can do it, but for now they are probably thinking he can't do it.

Anthony is pretty much limited to 1B/DH with a possible move to 3B at some point because of his exceptional glove work. He has negative footspeed. He’s not going to play OF unless we are OK with Greg Luzinski’s defense.

I don't disagree, but they said Duran said he'd pitch in any role. The difference is I think Duran is very clearly the best arm in the whole pen whereas it was always a toss up whole was from 2022-2024. But that also means he shouldn't always pitch the 9th. What often worked about having Kimbrel and Estevez close is that one of Hoffman, Strahm or Alvarado [when he was at his best] took the higher-leverage spot.

Between Kemp playing LF and all the Suarez talk about moving Schwarber back to LF or Harper to LF, I couldn't help but wonder why Bohm in LF was just never-ever-ever possible. I mean, Castellanos was a bad 3B who became a bad OF too.

Possible criticism of this trade is that the Phillies may be the only team to have sent something of actual value back to Minnesota where the Twins were clearly in pure fire sale mode as the Pohlad's try to strip the financial commitments to the bone to make a sale more palatable to a possible buyer, not too dissimilar to what the Padres did in 1993 (though at least the Padres ended up with a future HOFer in Trevor Hoffman in all that fire selling). Could we have gotten him for less?

Correa is seemingly falling off a cliff and the astros are taking on a good amount of salary...the twins were selling and gave him away.

Duran had many suitors and wasn't going to be just given away.

Correa is still only 30 and he was a 3.7 WAR player last year. The SS defense is bad now, but he might be positive or at worst neutral at 3B. The chances of a couple 3 WAR seasons the next 3 years are not remote. Probably 50-50 and for $20 million a year it is not the worst deal for Houston.

What i'm saying is the duran deal and the correa deal are not the same thing.

Duran has multiple interested teams while the Correa deal seemed to come out of nowhere when the twins decided to tank.

The Twins got real things for their other pieces, but Taj Bradley isn't a prospect so he won't be on the list of traded prospects.

Correa asked out and has a no trade clause and was willing to only go to one other team.
