Judging Adell by his career stats is a bit of a cheap shot since it is generally recognized that last year was his break out year. Looking solely at his career stats is like judging Marsh based upon solely on his career stats without considering that something obviously finally clicked this year. Adell is a legit RH 30 HR outfielder. Now I am not saying we should go ga ga over him. But dismissing him on the basis of career stats is a bad argument.

Ok, I'm not sure who you were responding to. But... I cited current-year stats, not career stats.

Yes, Adell had a much better season in 2025... and at age 26, which some SABR types consider the age at which a player is most likely to peak.

So far in 2026, Adell is producing at almost exactly his career averages - pretty much what he did in 2024. (His 2026 'breakout' pretty much washed away his earlier, poorer years.)

Will he rebound to something like what he did last season? Maybe. Will he settle in at something more like his 2024 (and his 2026 first "half")? If the former, he could have some value for a few years. If the latter, he's s below-average (OPS+ of 90 or so) hitting right fielder. That's roughly what Adolis Garcia was last year, although Garcia may have fallen off the age cliff in 2026. Adell is younger, which makes it more likely that he could continue to produce a slightly below-average OPS+, with the possibility of more... whereas Garcia is likely toast.

Would I trade Garcia one-on-one for Adell? Sure. Would I give up anything else of value, for the chance that Adell will do more than his 2024 and partial 2026 output? Not much; certainly not anybody high on our prospects list.

Adell just does not seem to move the needle too much and we might as well stay with Garcia especially as his bat shows some signs of life.

I guess what we really should look at are younger players like Hays a few years ago that may be in a playing time crunch with their organizations. The Phillies also like to trade for multiple years of control. So it makes sense to see if there are some guys out there currently classified as 4th OFs that could grow into some more playing time.

Looking at some of the bad teams this year - how about Casey Schmitt from the Giants? Kind of a younger Weston Wilson type. 831 OPS this season and 900+ against LHP. Age 27.

Still got six weeks for things to play out but it seems like it comes down to a combination of who's available and who would they replace (or greatly supplant)? Right now the latter is either Crawford or Garcia. Or Bohm. But the bench obviously could also use an upgrade, which in some cases happens by default (i.e. if a starter loses their job but is still on the roster and simply pushes Stubbs or Berroa/Rojas out).

From what I have read, the Giants see Schmidt as part of their young "core" and are unlikely to part with him unless there is an overpayment. Yes, Schmidt would be a good target but that is why the Giants are not looking to move him.

I guess there is no need to clear a 40-man spot in a couple of weeks. And his option is preserved if he goes on the 60-day IL though I guess the Phillies could release him to save that tiny bit of minimum salary.

Probably less than Trout. Now I don't think we have the prospects to really get Buxton (it would start with Wood). But if you want to move the needle AND address the team's biggest weakness - he is kind of the obvious solution.

Cubs could be looking to deal an outfielder. Suzuki is a rental having a down year with some indications he is improving to his 800 OPS past. Probably midlevel cost. More than the comp pick certainly.

Why it would behoove the Cubs to explore the market for Seiya Suzuki, plus more...

Ramon Laureano might be a good outfield target. He's got one of the strongest right field arms in the majors, rivaling Garcia's before yesterday's unfortunate injury.

Seems more the Rojas replacement (or Berroa slight improvement).

There is something about Dylan Campbell that suggests he is a good match for international pool allocations I guess. More seriously it did seem like we have another target in mind beyond the Korean pitcher. There have been several more Cuban players that have become available in the last couple of months.
