There's not a lot to differ, in terms of the effect on the target populations - they die.
That said... Do we still believe that it is our role (the US) or the role of the United Nations to intervene anywhere in the world where there are government (or anti-government) atrocities being committed? Or is it only our role to intervene in those such places that, for whatever reason, have received heavy media coverage? Or only those places that are populated by people who (more or less) "look like us" (which is to say, "look like" certain dominant ethnic subgroups in the United States)?
We've never done a very consistent job of being the world's moral policemen, and there's no evidence yet that the Trump administration is going to break any new ground (at least positively) in this regard. They're appalled at what Assad is doing in Syria, but welcome Abdel Fattah el-Sisi with open arms, and say complimentary things about Rodrigo Duterte.
What's going on in Syria is appalling - but that's not different, really, from what's going on in the Philippines, or in Egypt...or what went on in Chile under Pinochet, etc., etc., etc. We have no intention - as a society, as a governing administration, as a nation - of intervening to prevent all these atrocities...so why are we intervening to prevent atrocities (or try to prevent, probably failing or compounding the problem) in Syria (as opposed to... pick your poison)?
At the end of the day, it's not about preventing these atrocities, because it's obvious that few Americans have the stomach for the cost of doing that.. It's about responding - politically - to domestic "outrage" that's promoted by 24/7 news media outlets that focus on particular stories... because it's profitable to do so. It's about government policy that's driven by voter emotionalism, which in turn is driven by sensationalistic "news" media.
If you never watch cable news (not Fox, nor CNN, nor MSNBC), and get your news only from the print media (and their web sites), you have a chance, at least, to gain something approximating a fair understanding of the world. If you depend on the cable news media, you will not - because those media exist to manipulate viewer emotions.
My advice: Cut the cable. Just do it. Cable news (and staring at the tube in general) just dumbs you down. And the rest of cable TV isn't much better; "reality" shows; shows that are built around people shooting everybody and everything in sight; shows that are built around constant sex. None of this is realistic, none of this is any way edifying. It's crap. So.. read books. Read magazines (no, not People magazine). Read a neswpaper (on paper or online - but not the National Enquirer).
Follow the Phillies! Follow the minors! It's escapist, but at least it's not poisoning your perspectives on reality, the way all that other crap does.
