Eflin is the kind of prospect you can get for a veteran at the trade deadline, a promising "A" ball player who wasn't a top 5 guy, so teams consider him expendable for a veteran who can help them win now. We got him and another prospect for an aging SS who was out of baseball a year later.
We have five starting pitchers (with Thompson), a bullpen full of prospects, and position players lined up everywhere.
Why would we trade a 27 year old starting player with a .800+ OPS and plus defense for a prospect?
Hellickson, Bourjas and Gomez can garner solid A ball prospects, no, they won't get a major league ready tier 1 prospect, but can help build depth at the weak spot in the system (Williamsport and Lakewood). Right now, pitching depth deep in the system is the priority, this year and next year should provide a very deep crop of rookie and Lakewood prospects, so the "hole in the donut" will be Clearwater next year.
We're 40-46 with talent a year away, and a team that's mostly composed of young players, the "rebuild" is practically over.
