According to reports on MLB.com, Prince Fielder will announce his retirement deciding that his neck injury is a career-ender. I don't know if this will get the Rangers (and Tigers) off the hook for his contract.

Edit: per mlbtraderumors, he won't techinically retire so he won't forfeit his money. Rather, he will be permanently medically disabled. Can't the Phillies just say the same about Harrison?

That's pretty much where they are with Harrison, insurance is already covering a portion of his salary -- reportedly as much as 75% -- so long as he's disabled from this specific condition. His status could and presumably will change to "permanent" but it's unlikely that would increase the insurance payment if it's already that substantial. Insurance is only covering $9 million of Fielder's deal (with the Rangers paying another 9, and the Tigers 6).

As an aside, this Mariners team is really fun and I hope they make a run to the Wild Card. Their bullpen throws straight fire.

Did I miss something? Other than a wild card win back when Griffey was the kid and a disappointing playoff loss after one of the best seasons ever, what has Seattle done in this millennium? Felix has been a great pitcher but hasn't carried them anywhere. I still scratch my head that he won the Cy Young with a 13-12 record.

Meanwhile Ortiz has three rings and hit .688 in the 2013 WS, and is regarded as one of, if not the most clutch player ever. That said, I agree that this year's Mariners team is a good team, they have a shot if the AL East beat each other up down the stretch and Tigers cool down.

Good point, and if Felix pitched for the Red Sox, he might have won 20 games at least once, and might have more than one Cy Young. Then again, who knows how he would pitch in a stressful situation. There hasn't been pressure on him ever in terms of playoffs or contention. Of course, he did hold it together for a perfect game, so that's not nothin', but there's no way to really know what his make-up would be in a big market high-demand situation.

That Felix won the Cy Young at 13-12 (a prominent triumph for advanced stats though he also led the league in ERA) is exactly why the Mariners fans love him so much. He has been dominant despite being on a team that couldn't win for him, the team's struggles have never been his fault, and essentially, they have no one else. Also, lifelong Mariner who didn't leave (and is signed through 2019).

As he left the Yankees last night, I couldn't stop myself from seething as I watched ARod being given accolades for winning the 2009 WS for the New Yorkers. As far as I'm concerned that WS win deserves an asterisk next to it like all of the other things associated with ARod. He has numbers on a page but they deserve no merit.

Actually, I do. For a while we didn't know what was going on there but as time went by and more came out, IMO, it became jaded.

The "special vitamins" the Phils were taking in '93 were industry-wide and not banned by baseball at the time. Everyone was on greenies, so the '93 season isn't tainted since the playing field was level.
