The White Sox have acquired James Shields for Erik Johnson and Fernando Tatis Jr. Padres picking up more than half of the remaining $ (assuming Shields doesn't opt out).

Dodgers designate Carl Crawford for assignment with $35 million left on his contract and he will be released once he clears waivers. Could the Phillies take a stab at him for the ML minimum for the remainder of this year and next? I'm not a big fan of taking on other team's cast offs, but I think I would rather have Carl Crawford, former gold glover, in the lineup than Paredes or Bourjos. But Crawford has proven history in the league and being JPs cousin doesn't hurt either.

The Dodgers sure are providing a lesson on how to blow through money with little to no return.

Jake Arrieta's regular season win streak ends at 20. Arizona defeated Arrieta and the Cubs today, 3-2, at Wrigley.

It was Arrieta's first regular season loss since....the Phillies beat him last year, 5-0, behind Cole Hamels' no-hitter.

Just say no to Crawford:

1) he's no longer a top fielder, Bourjas is much better, Goeddel will be better by September
2) he's a lousy hitter, going straight downhill
3) you'd be wasting a 25 man/40 man roster spot in order to build a bonfire of 100 dollar bills.

He's a prime example why you don't give contracts that commit you to spending a lot of money to over 30 players.
Fell off at age 29-30, two decent seasons at age 31-32, then a swan dive off the career cliff.
$142M for 5.3 WAR and declining.

He would cost the Phillies the MLB minimum pro-rated. Dodgers are responsible for the salary. Someone will pick him up and give him new life. No doubt he needs a change of scenery similar to Utley needing a change of scenery.

Our old friend Jerome Williams signed a few days ago with STL on a minor league deal. He gave up 3 runs in 5 innings today in a losing cause for the AAA Memphis Redbirds.

There's just no reason for the Phillies to give him playing time, you don't want him gumming up the OF in late August after some of these other guys are long gone and Altherr (as well as potential AAA call-ups) is ready. Crawford will be able to choose where he goes, if he's wanted, or on a minor league deal, so he'll either look for guaranteed playing time that sets him up for next year, or a bench job with a post-season contender.

The JP part is admittedly interesting, but in the end Carl Crawford simply can't help the team. He's probably not as bad as this season's numbers, but the almost-35 year-old player he actually is isn't even better than Paredes (let alone Goedell). Paredes had the better 2015, and can play IF positions too.

All good points - he would be a better fit on a contending team rather than a rebuilding team.

If they could find the space, I see nothing but positives of having Carl around for JP. Granted, I don't know how close they are, but using the Dodgers money to invest in the comfort of the next face of the franchise seems like a win-win.

And expose another prospect to the Rule 5 draft?
JP won't be up until next year, so Crawford has no value this year, and negative value if you keep on the roster at the expense of someone who can actually play.
I don't buy this "pampering" prospects nonsense, if JP needs his cousin to be comfortable, he's not much of a prospect - mental toughness is part of the makeup of franchise players.

Yes, but "if they could find the space" is huge. Just look at the hate Asche is already getting on this board for having taken 10 or so ABs away from Goeddel or whomever. Asche at least has some potential future value, as a trade or otherwise. One can't say the same of C Crawford. As zambonir put it, Crawford would be gumming up the OF, just another flawed OF when the Phils can't find space for the ones they've got.

Nothing to gain from taking a chance on Crawford but aggravation.

As mlbtraderumors states, Cleveland and San Francisco are the most logical destinations for him, in terms of contenders with short-term needs in the outfield.

I mentioned after the horrendous recent performance of Giancarlo Stanton against the Phillies that I suspected he might be having eye problems like Tony Conigliaro had after he was beaned in the face. Conigliaro seemed to recover for a while and showed good power but his vision slowly worsened and he was forced to retire.

Don't be surprised if Stanton is suffering the same issues. He struck out 4 times in 5 at bats tonight and has struck out 17 times in his last 40 AB's and 75 times already this season in 183 AB's. His average is down to .197. Of course, given his contract, he probably feels an incredible responsibility to play and the Marlins are certainly going to give him as much time as possible to hopefully find his stroke.

But my sense is that this is not going to end well for a guy who was possibly the best power hitter in baseball till he was beaned in the face. I saw what Conigliaro went through and it was so sad, a guy who at 23 years of age led the AL in home runs and looked for all the world as a future super star.

I hope Stanton comes out of this but...a guy who was such a great hitter before the injury sure seems to be having trouble picking up the baseball. Keep an eye on this one.
