Mac left Leiter in to take a beating, can't blame him, you don't want to burn your bullpen out in a meaningless September, with half your starters injured.
Leiter looked tired, his FB was only hitting 91, and didn't have a lot of life, his splitter was consistently low and hitters spit on it, his slider lacked bite.
That's his biggest problem, he's not that big and lacks stamina, which is why he's best suited to the 6th starter/long relief role.
He'll have trouble maintaining velocity pitching every 5 days.
