The point is that on a back to back (after getting 4 outs the day before) Bowlan is really not better and likely worse than the alternatives like Kerkering or even Shugart or the new guy. Think of him as a 5.00 ERA pitcher on back to backs. It is actually 7.20 though a relatively small sample.
It does not matter that he has earned the second highest leverage spots in the bullpen. Sometimes the 6th best guy is better than the 2nd best when you factor in usage. McFarlane actually did his first back to back this week and he was decent (though a little shaky in command). I want McFarlane in higher leverage situations but probably don't want him much on back to backs. Mayza seems the guy with the rubber arm who does not seem much worse on back to backs.
