I usually don't like to see retaliation, but, realistically, if one of your players gets drilled by an intentional or careless pitch enough times and you don't at least make the other team think there might be a cost, pitchers on the other team will continue to be "careless" and your position players will pay the price for that.
One of the undeniable elements of baseball is that it's fairly intimidating to stand 60'6" away from a guy that can throw a baseball at 95 mph. The people throwing need to be respectful of the damage they can do by pitching carefully. I don't know if this particular situation was careless; I have not seen the pitch or the sequence. But it's honestly naive to think that there isn't a chance the Phils pitchers might get a bit careless today, too. And, as a former position player, I welcomed that protection.
