One highlight in the four game set with the visitors from New York, that being Nola's win yesterday. Of course, there were individual bright spots here and there for the Phillies, but all in all, the Mets handled them fairly easily in the series.

Third place is not what they were looking for this season though. That was a goal for us, maybe.

We own the Braves, the Mets own us, everybody but the Nats will be home come playoff time.

Williams flies out, Galvis doesn't tag up, catcher has trouble with the throw home and Herrera either thinks Galvis had already tagged or that Galvis was going to break for home, so he breaks for third. Doesn't even try to head back to 2B for a rundown.

IMO Herrera made two mistakes on that play -- breaking for 3rd, but then also giving up when he was clearly going to be caught off of 2nd base. If he'd forced the Mets into a rundown, at least they have a chance to accidentally throw the ball into CF or maybe Galvis could have snuck home in the confusion.

Well, one can't fault Herrera for not being aggressive enough! I like his enthusiasm and we just have to take the bad with the good.

Why didn't Galvis try to score on the play?

It's unclear why Galvis wasn't going, though maybe it's been covered in game story by now.

And agreed, you can't just let them tag you out there. I suspect that Herrera wasn't giving up on the play or hanging his head (the way one might running to first on a pop-up) but rather, he didn't actually know he wasn't out yet (i.e. he thought he was forced out with Galvis occupying the base).

(Edit, here's the story. No real details on why Samuel didn't send Galvis but plenty on Herrera. Everyone saying the right things.)

Odubel Herrera makes another blunder as Phillies fall to Mets

That's the question. The ball was hit deep enough into CF for a runner to score. Conforto does not a a rep for a great arm. Samuel should have sent Galvis and if he did, Galvis would have scored since the throw was off line. Herrera did the smart thing by taking third on the throw. Had Galvis scored and Herrera remained at second, the phans would have been all over him for not advancing. The goof up here was made by the 3B coach not Herrera.

It's two different things is all. Samuel should have sent Galvis. But Herrera isn't supposed to run without looking at 3B (especially since he's done it before, albeit in the opposite situation).

There is no question that Herrera needs to watch what is going on, but this does raise the question as to the third base coaching. Usually I have questioned sending a runner home when they were out by a considerable distance, especially when there weren't two outs in the inning. I think in the case today, the runner (Glavis) should have been sent home. Regardless, not sending him and Herrera making the blunder into a double play probably didn't result in this loss today.

I watched a short video clip of the play a few times and it's hard for me to tell why Galvis stopped. He started down the line and then retreated. Did he do that on his own, or did Samuel direct him? When Galvis stopped, one of the Mets' announcers said "Are you kidding?"

My season ticket friends and I have been saying for some time that Samuel is not a very good third base coach. He just doesn't have good judgment in terms of when to send people and when not to send them. For me, the guys he's held who coulda/shoulda scored have stood out far more than the guys he's sent into outs at the plate. Same for Bill Dancy a number of years ago. To insert an "intangible", I think having a guy held a third who probably would have scored had he been sent is far more deflating than a guy who gets thrown out at the plate. At least it is for a fan and, I suspect, probably on the players too.

I was of the opinion that Sammy and Bowa probably should have been flip-flopped as third base and bench coach.
