JFC, stop. He just turned 23.

He ended up throwing 96 in almost 5 innings after a rough first. That tells me he’s a friggin competitor.

This is what you are going to get from a young guy. He had a couple of good starts, now he faces adversity and battles through it.

I'm not going to worry about Painter long-term. Sometimes good pitchers have bad rookie seasons. The question is whether a contending team can afford to carry two #5 starters in the rotation.

I didn’t know a “not a good start by Painter” would get be a “JFC, stop”. Never said he’s a lost cause (quite the opposite”. Just said it was not a good start which is factually true.

When Painter was drafted fastball characteristics were a red flag for him that went away when he started throwing 99, but there was visibly more carry on the ball. Doesn’t seem that improvement would go away throwing 95-97, I (and I guess the Phillies) don’t know why that life disappeared. What I do see is mediocre extension and his hand comes up making it easier to pick up the ball, as compared to Yamamoto who has a similar delivery.

That is a fair point. Sorry for the reaction - there was just a lot of other negative stuff going on in other threads as well that probably brought an unfair reaction from me. Mea culpa.
