That's the difference bettween a #3 and #5, can you throw the curve, slider or changeup when and where you want it?
Velocity matters, mostly to set up your secondary pitches, but also to let you get away with being less than perfect.
So Hellickson at 89 with a meh changeup is a disaster, Hellickson at 91 with a good changeup is almost unhittable.
Eickhoff at 91-92 is pounded without a killer curve, a change would make him even better.
