Well, I was wondering about that. They'd only had three games together before this one. So it's not nothing, but also probably not statistically significant. Still, it's undeniable that the Phillies are losing games when they play the back-up catcher, at least as much as when a reliever blows a save (which hasn't always ended in a loss).

re: Harper I suppose we should be concerned that his back or elbow is a factor. But if it's not that (and even if it is) he'll surely come around.

The good news is things can only get better, and they haven't been that bad overall in the meantime.

Here's hoping yesterday's game was travel fatigue.

Nola relapsed. After THREE spectacular defensive plays behind him, was hoping he'd regain his chops, but he just could not find his pinpoint control. Took a look around to find Smoltz' story: https://nextlevelballplayer.com/pitching/john-smoltz-mental-toughness/ The Phils should give Nola a nudge in this direction. Nothing to lose. The only other alternative is form, and Nola looks OK IMHO, but maybe there are some pitching coaches here who can see a form problem.

Was really hopeful Marchan would rest JT more. Not happening. Maybe he's not performing because of the limited PT, too.

Ross might be the weakest arm in the pen. There's gotta be somebody better around.

I was thinking the same thing. I feel like at least 1 or 2 of Nola’s strong starts that Realmuto was behind the dish but I could be wrong. In short, Nola’s issues might have more to do with who is catching than the weather.

Stocker was talking about how Marchan doesn't keep his glove held as a target like many catchers do, and maybe Nola's motion makes it so he's looking at some point for a target that's not there.

I feel like Nola should be the one making the young back-up C better, not vice-versa. But it seems pretty clear Stubbs' defensive and game prep contribution was significant, and missed if his replacement also doesn't hit l.
