I think it's still easier said than done to find one, especially when there's no playing time available and you pay accordingly. Having a young player like Marchan (or Knapp, or Chooch back in the day) who may be a career back-up or turn into something more is the way to go. But also easier said than done.
And the Phillies have shown it can contend for a World Series - and indeed, be among the winningest Phillies teams of all-time - with the current back-up catcher. They also have the best pitching we may have seen in our lifetime (or at least since 2011) with Stubbs being part of that (both behind the scenes, and as Turnbull's personal catcher for the most part).
But they really couldn't afford to lose JT in the playoffs.
I think they know all this, or they wouldn't have given Stubbs a split deal to begin with. They hoped Marchan might play himself in the mix and if that's not going to happen they will have to at least add depth in July, whether it's in the majors or someone they'd be more comfortable with than Garcia (who has never been better than Stubbs in the majors).
