If you read any of the interviews with Hellickson he confirms that one of the major reasons he was pulled was he was breathing hard from running the bases still. I actually think it wasnt a bad idea anyway, it is the first game, he had a good one, get him out before it turns and get some bullpen innings to get everyone going.
Amusingly enough he said "I am not doing that again", implying from now on he is stopping at 2nd pretty much no matter what. Pretty funny. They asked him when he last had a triple,,, "Never",
That said, Hellickson is a veteran, you expect a little guile in this situation. Go out there, complain about something on the mound and get the grounds crew out to fluff it up a little and buy yourself some time. Not complaining, and maybe those days are gone, but if he really wanted to stay in I would think a veteran would have done something like that.
Good solid game, and while some probably wanted him to stay in, it was a humid day (actually raining), so really to me 5+ is just fine.
