Not me because I knew that the Phils were trying to sway Richie Allen into un-retiring and coming to the Phillies and had even sent Schmidt, Bowa, Cash and Luzinski to visit him on his farm. Allen was a 1st baseman then and the day I heard about the Maddox-Montanez deal I knew it meant the Allen deal was going to happen since A] Montanez was a first baseman and B] the Phils needed a CFer.
Sure enough within 1-2 days the Allen deal was announced and I thought the Phils suddenly had one of the best lineups in baseball. Remember, Allen was coming off of 3 very good years with the White Sox [72-74] and was still considered one of the best hitters in baseball but he had refused to report to Atlanta after being dealt there that winter.
I thought with Schmidt, Luzinski and Allen in the middle of the order they would form a murderer's row. Reality was that Allen was rusty in 1975 and although he started well in 1976, by the end of that season he was a pariah and was probably the reason that Dave Cash left as a free agent at the end of that season.
I still believe the 1977 team may have been the greatest offensive Phillie team I have ever witnessed [2009 team was a close second] but I always wondered how much better they would have been had they had Cash instead of Sizemore at 2nd base.
