I think Tocci gets called up in September. Reward him for his performance and he will get put on the 40 man anyhow. His defense alone makes him an acceptable Sept. call up.

Interesting. At least Tocci can stay on the field. When healthy, Quinn probably is the better player but that's the problem; Quinn is always hurt.

It will depend on the rest of the roster but I just don't know if you can protect two similar players. You are probably more likely to lose Quinn. In fact his injury history almost makes him more likely to stick as a Rule V.

I don't dump either of them, ala Asher or Goedell, but they could be included in another trade, traded for a greater area of need.

Phillies signed a big OF that was undrafted out of HS but had a big summer:

We are talking Aaron Judge size here (6'8" and PhuturePhilles Jim saw him at the complex and thought 6'6" or 6'7").

andyb...have to admit, as soon as I read about the DeLaCruz signing it brought to mind outfielder Jeff Jackson, a former Phillie #1 pick, who also came out of nowhere in his senior year in HS to become the 4th player drafted and certainly one of the Phils worst first round picks EVER.

That said, this signing deserves a well done Phillies for even finding him.

It's amazing how bad most of the first ten picks of the 1989 draft turned out to be.

1. Ben McDonald, RHP, Orioles. The consensus 1-1 after Olerud developed health issues, solid but unspectacular ML career.
2. Tyler Houston, C, Braves. Ok 8 year ML career but no star.
3. Roger Salkeld, RHP, Mariners. BUST. Brief unsuccessful ML career.
4. Jeff Jackson, OF, Phillies. BUST. Never made it past AA.
5. Donald Harris, OF, Rangers. BUST. Brief unsuccessful ML career.
6. Paul Coleman, OF, Cardinals. BUST. Never made it past AA. Seemed to have injury issues but wasn't good when healthy either.
7. Frank Thomas, IB, White Sox. HALL OF FAMER. Dropped because many worried that he would try to be a Bo Jackson and play football too or chose to play football instead. He was a good tight end for Auburn.
8. Earl Cunningham, OF, Cubs. BUST. Never made it past high A though may have had injury issues from looking at the low games played numbers.
9. Kyle Abbott, LHP, Angels. Short, not so good ML career. Arguably could be rated a BUST.
10. Charles Johnson, C, Expos. Did not sign but eventually had a good ML career.

Yes, the thing I remember about that draft was that 3 outfielders, Jackson, Coleman and Cunningham ALL came out of nowhere that spring to become top 10 draftees. I do remember thinking how strange it was that this happened, still don't know. Literally, none of them was none till that spring and then they had brilliant senior years in HS. Jackson had best hitting numbers, Coleman seemed the best all around player and Cunningham had the most power.

Kyle Abbott, LHP, Angels. Short, not so good ML career. Arguably could be rated a BUST.

Wasnt Abbott the pitcher with the deformed right hand/arm that everyone would try and bunt to but it turned out he was actually pretty good at manipulating his glove and throwing? (EDIT: That was Jim Abbott, got it all Abbott backwards)

I do remember him as the pitcher that finished 1-14 with a 5+ ERA that was oddly completely dominant in AA. He is also famous in Phillies lore for being part of the deal that brought Ruben Amaro, Jr to the Phils for Von Hayes.

No, that was Jim Abbott, who was born with only a left arm. I saw him pitch his debut, he was very good. Kyle Abbott was the guy who came over in the Von Hayes deal from the Angels and went 1-14 with the Phils in his rookie year.
