I think he's probably the boom-or-bust pick if they use it, but they won't use it.

My assessment is based on his AAU and high-school play and reputation in addition to his college freshman season. The reports on Bailey have always been that he’s a hero-ball guy at all times, and is first concerned about getting his. to his credit, Harper talked about him recently and said he is a good teammate.

That's a small list and most of those are role players...as of now.

The Celtics have two guys who are the center of that team...team first guys tend to be on rosters because they understand they are complimentary players...Bailey and Harper have never been that...heck, most of the guys at the top of the draft have always been the center of their universe.

I try not to judge teenagers that harshly especially when they grew up being the best on any court they are on.

Agreed. Someone will either look like a genius or get fired over that pick.

Well, nobody on the Sixers probably has to worry about getting fired for it, they'll be gone by then regardless.

If you're drafting the future I think you have to take the risk on the highest ceiling and hope the flawed 19 year-old can still turn into a good 22 year-old. And Bailey also fits better positionally in the short-term. If he needs to be The Guy he will certainly have to learn not to be very quickly.

I disagree. The success rate for taking risk with young guys who need the "light bulb" to turn on for them is much closer to 0 than people always fool themselves into thinking.

The red flags on a guy like Bailey - defensive effort, lack of toughness, wilting in big spots, selfish-play, etc. - are just killers IMO. People will point to Carmelo and that's probably at best a 1 in 25 thing.

Even though these are all kids, they have spent most of their formative years developing character traits. Really hard to correct the bad ones after dumping 8 figures into their bank accounts.

Some executive will draft him high hoping he grows up and they'll be hoping the same at the next team he goes to.

I found the PHLY Kyle Neubeck article to be pretty persuasive, warts and all. He also seems to think the Sixers will make the pick, but who knows.

Has anyone crunched the numbers in terms of what the rookie contract for the #3 pick does to the cap and apron in terms of who else can be brought back next (or brought in) next year?

Carmelo won a national championship in his one year in college, it’s been said here and i agree that the biggest red flag is the team’s record and failure to even qualify with supposedly two of the best players in the country.

I would say that most injury-prone big man are likely subject to some of the red flags that can be identified early on. You may point to Walton, but that's a pretty big exception and Portland still got a championship with him. Lot's of other big men that have had long careers in the NBA.

Most likely this is in reference to Joel, who entered the pros with an injury red flag and I've also been adamant that he has had other red flags that have been evident for years. Joel's problems don't all stem from his injuries.

I was thinking of Joel and Walton and several other Blazers (Bowie, Oden) and Sixers. The Sixers took Shawn Bradley 2nd overall! And Andrew Bynum was still only 24 when the Sixers got him.

Even Yao was Joel-like. Great player, broke down.

Anecdotal of course but a list of theoretically Simmons or Bailey-like players who did or didn't pan out would be too.

Some on here will tell me this is minor and just the way of the new generation. And it could be.

The problem is when you are leaderless and rudderless with no one setting the examples of the e sacrifices required to be a championship caliber player. Then it's just every guy for himself doing whatever they want to advance their own personal goals.

Whether it is correct or not, that mantle has rested upon Joel since Butler left. And that's why the Sixers are where they are.

Very hard to judge wilting when your team isn't .500 and didn't play in many big spots.

you're on a team with two great players and everyone knows the ball will be in their hands..so much of this evaluation is based on his time in high school. There almost no information to take from his one college year as he was on a bad team...just like harper.

It feels weird for me to defend him but a lot of these evaluations forget that it was two players and some others guys on that college team.

There wasn't a player with a higher upside than Ben Simmons either. Bailey might not be that bad in that department but he's close. Hard Pass. Counting on a kid to fundamentally change his stripes is not a good plan.

Easy interview. Ask Bailey who the 13 most important people in his life are. If he says, "My twelve strippers and Dom," pass.
