I don't fault them for making him the pick, they just got bamboozled by Boston on the trade, both in terms of how badly they needed to make it and what they gave up to make it. I don't recall many people thinking it was a good trade at the time, inasmuch as they still could have gotten him, or could have "settled" for another player.
