Well my dream of Machado in a Phillies uniform will hopefully only be delayed till this winter. Can’t say I’m not a little dissappointe, but hopefully will be content after seeing what the Dodgers gave up.

It is hard to compare a teams system and needs and expectations but certainly the Phillies don't have a AA hitting star like Diaz (or the depth to not need him). Obviously there were lines the Phillies wouldn't cross and that's okay.

You got to think they're halfway to a Britton deal if this much research has been done.

Diaz, May, and Robinson are listed as the Dodgers' #4, #10 and #18 prospects by MLB Pipeline. An outfielder, RHP, and a 2B/SS.

We really don't know if the rumors discussed here earlier this week about what the Phillies offered are correct or not. It seemed to me to be too much for the Phillies to give up for a player not committing past this season and it seems IMO to be more than the Dodgers are now reported to be giving up. Plus Baltimore is sending some sort of monetary considerations back to the Dodges.

I am torn between really wanting to have Machado on the team starting back up after the break and the fear that they would give up too much. Of course, that is still an unknown since all prospects are far from a sure thing. I just have to trust the GM and front office group to have made an effort and being willing to draw the line at some point.

I trust they will make a strong effort to sign Machado during the off season if and when he becomes a free agent. Manny is a much more valuable player than Harper and I much prefer they sign him. Again, my opinion. I would not be surprised to see Harper end up signing back with the Nationals.

Assuming Machado is now lost for this season, I hope the GM is able to add a lesser piece or two or three for the remainder of this season. A LH reliever, a bench upgrade, and a starting pitcher, preferably LH, all could help this season without costing a top prospect that they don't want to lose.

Saw this tweet that suggests 5 prospects to O's and no money involved in the deal. I guess we won't know what the deal really is until it is announced.

Was there ever even a published report naming 3-4 players the Phillies were supposedly offering? I feel strongly that the rumor SF heard from her friend was a proposal for Machado and Britton together, if it was anything. It could have also just been a list of possibilities. But we'll see what the Dodgers really gave up.

All they have missed for now, maybe, is a stronger chance at a playoff run this season. Next season? If they don't get Machado they still have a lot of cards to play. If they were willing to trade Medina and De Los Santos for a rental they'll still be willing to trade them for a controllable position player. And if they do get Machado they have even more cards.

9 games against the Nats and 7 games against the Braves, I reckon that is what the analytics department is focused on for trades, though obviously anything that makes the team better (particularly the lefty arms) counts against most teams.

The consolation, I hope, is that Crawford and Kingery develop and improve. I like the team as currently put together, even if the offense has been frustrating.

Is Diaz really a AA star? I think Hasley is every bit the prospect that Diaz is difference is we were not willing to give him up for a rental.

If the report of five players is true then the Phillies were smart not to do the deal. It’s simply too much for a rental player. Word is the Phillies were not even In the top,three teams in the bidding, the O’s simply “leaked” out some names like Medina to get the Dodgers to,up their offer.

I hope I’m wrong, but this is a bummer in that I won’t be surprised if the Dodgers sign him in the exclusive negotiating window after the season for something like 10 yrs/$350m and while he hits free agency, he won’t really get to the open market. They’ll move Seager to 3td and trade Turner, who’s in his mid 30s.

Moving on from MM, I'm with Squire in terms of pursuing 26-year-old Nick Castellanos. He has an 880 OPS, which makes up for a lot of defensive weakness at 3B. A couple of things make me optimistic about NC if we can obtain him---first, the Phils seem better at working on defensive improvement than the Tigers do, so I'd hope that he would get better defensively after the trade would occur, and, second, we have a historically low number of balls in play this season, which reduces the relative value of defense (and that reduction is not accounted for in the WAR stats). I think he'd be worth a win or two over the last 2 months...

I wouldn't call Haseley a AA star though. He's only had 17 AB and his CLW OPS only .715. He seems to have really turned on the after-burners lately, but not sure how highly another team would value this SSS.

It sounds more and more like we were never really in the running for Machado. And now we are considering moving from Franco to Castellanos !!!! People complained about Franco's defense but want Castellanos playing third !!! He is a real butcher in the field.

ED, in modern baseball the best 3B average less than 3 plays made per game, the worst average more than 2.5, and more than 2/3 of them are routine (catching pop-ups, long-hop grounders, at-em line drives, etc.) plays that any pro will make 95% of the time. How much of a butcher is he? Is this based on personal observation of Tiger games? Does it really matter if you're talking about approximately 1 play per week?
