Crawford may well develop into a competent MLB hitter, but as of now he hasn't. I don't want to give up on him and he has little trade value, so I think we just have to play him a lot at SS or 3B this year to let him try to settle in as a major leaguer. I'd put him at SS, since the Phillies have expressed doubts about his defensive ability there and that also needs to be established. More AAA won't demonstrate what Crawford needs to demonstrate. The Phillies can't succeed with just outside position player talent. We have to convert some of our top draft picks. As of today, Kingery and Crawford remain the likeliest over the next two years. One might argue necessity, but they were both jerked around too much last season. A rebuild can't work if the team panics and goes right to mediocre FA or, worse, trades more young talent for mediocre guys from other teams. At some point, you have to make it work with your own players from the farm -- that includes guys like Williams acquired in trade. This is how you retain talent and keep the payroll flexible enough to sign FAs who are true stars. I don't want to add stopgap meh vets. 2019 is the year to test: Kingery, Crawford, Alfaro, Quinn, Odubel, Williams, Altherr.
