I think we can pretty much call Machado and Trout day dreams. I doubt we have a snowball's chance in hell of obtaining either player.
We will have the ammunition to make a couple major trades, and I think Klentak would rather trade for more pitching than sign it in free agency.
As far as signing a position player, if a solid 3B becomes available, maybe, but what other position?
Altherr is starting to look like a fixture in RF next year, Herrera is set in CF unless he totally implodes (and Quinn and Tocci are right behind him), Cozens, WIlliams and Pullin are in a race to get to and take over LF, Crawford and Canelo are lining up behind Galvis, Kingery behind Hernandez, Hoskins behind Joseph, Alfaro behind Rupp and Knapp.
To me, the optimal strategy is wait a year, see how the kids develop, then trade for more young pitching.
You can never have too many talented young pitchesr in your organization, given the attrition level.
I might break the bank for Harper, but something tells me the Nats will find the money.
Other than that, how many FAs would be a significant upgrade? And I don't think Klentak will throw a big contract at a 30+ year old pitcher.
