xogfog...my point was that in reality Allen, Schill and Rolen were all moved way before they actually were traded when the Phils began leaking how difficult they were to deal with,
As for the Bull, not true. He was the starting left fielder when healthy in 1980 and was still batting cleanup in the World Series. In fact, he got two very key hits in the NLCS against the Astros and still had a few good years ahead of him offensively.
The Phils began talking about how heavy he was, etc and ended up selling him to the ChiSox. This is precisely my point...for 4 of the best Phillie players of the past 50 years the Phils got McCarver, Polanco and Padilla. That's it...a decent hitting catcher, a solid but unspectacular infielder and a pitcher who might have caused as many organizational headaches to the Phils as the players they moved. For 3 possible future HOFers and one of the best power hitters in recent Phillie history.
I think moving Herrera now might result in the same thing. I still believe Herrera is a potential .320 hitter. That said, I do trust this management group much more than I do the Wade/Giles groups that moved Bull, Rolen and Schilling.
