I am still confused why this intelligent community of Phillies fans is not upset about this, as I am. Talk all of this offseason was about moves to make and I am still unhappy that the team continues to basically just take the money and run. Why are we not trying to get better players than what we have? Why are we not even competing on international FAs over 23? We should have assets on this team that can be used to accelerate the rebuild, but instead we get marginal players and hope they have good years. The money is there, no one doubts that, and while we may have to overpay why not do that?
As it is this rebuild could go on forever. We have a handful of prospects that look good, but prospects are just that, prospects. You have to have 2-3 strong prospects just to fill 1 slot, and really we do not. While paying FAs is expensive it is really the only way to fill in the holes in the organization. Currently we have a young team, but we have very little offense, so we get marginal hitters like Saunders and Kendrick. We need starting pitchers so we get a marginal player like Buchholtz. In the meantime we have almost $87M in profits for the owners.
