As you said, the other shoes are starting to fall and there are finally small signals the Republicans in Congress are waking from their cowardly slumber. Even Chaffetz came out of hiding and may finally do some oversight. Shocking, I know, but perhaps baby steps are all we can expect from these hypocrites.
They will likely continue to drag their feet, slow roll the investigations and prevent the appointment of a select commission and special counsel. So, getting the answers that they all say they want will probably crawl into the fall, but hopefully Ryan and McConnell may finally put country above party and integrity of our system above their cynical power "arrangement" with Trump.
The problem is we are a long long way from even getting close to impeachment. The House is in Republican control and they are not going to start impeachment processes until they have zero choice or they lose control to the Democrats in 2018.
The DOJ is run by Jeff Sessions and Rod Rosenstein, both have shown they are compromised and willing to carry Trump's water. Rosenstein may claim he was manipulated, but he has had plenty of time to act on a special counsel and failed to do so. The new director of the FBI will be a Trump appointment and the Republicans in the Senate can confirm that person without Democrats input.
Pence has already shown he'll carry Trump's water as well and break any tie. If DeVos, Pruitt and the like got confirmed without any qualifications for their positions, putting a sycophant in charge of the FBI is certainly possible.
The special prosecutor statute is defunct and would need to be passed by Congress and signed by the President - fat chance in hades for that to happen.
The press and public outcry have been relentless, but do not move the needle as long as Republicans sit in gerry mandered safe districts, get funded/supported by alt right, religious right and fake news organizations (Breitbart, Gateway Pundit etc.) and continue to fool the ~35% of the voting electorate currently behind Trump.
And, last but not least, as long as the Democrats STILL do not have a forward looking, positive, productive and compelling approach to persuade the public they are worth supporting. Their party conflicts still have not been resolved and anti-Trumpism combined with being the party of no is not a winning strategy.
