Some thoughts:
The hitting is way above last year, 12 of 15 games against Nats and Mets, and Guthrie the only weak starter they saw, yet they battled in most games, with lots of good ABs.
Pete has a different dilemma than last season, where he had the choice of Asche, Ruf, Bourjas, Goeddel, Altherr off his injury, and Paredes as his corner OFs, and Howard and an unknown in Joseph at 1B. It was basically a choice between bad options.
Now he has Kendrick, Saunders, Altherr and Nava as his corner OFs, and Joseph pretty much established at 1B.
Altherr is going to play, but Pete is right to find time for Nava, Saunders and Kendrick, at least up to the trade deadline. He is paid to win games, and they're all playing well.
It's nice to have a bench with Knapp, Blanco, Nava and Altherr. Jury is still out on Stassi.
Joseph is a work in progress, he has to be more disciplined, but that changeup was killing a lot of Phillies hitters, 91 MPH with a wicked sink coming off a 98-100 MPH FB! Hernandez, who may be the best pure hitter on the team, had three straight Ks.
Knapp just looks like a solid hitter now that he's starting to relax.
Altherr has tightened up his swing, turning on a 98 MPH FB - or why velocity isn't enough in today's game. He'll be the starting RF by August.
Franco comes down to "less is more," his best ABs are when he sticks with that quick swing through the zone, his worst when he gets "aggressive" and swings from the heels.
