The Phillies got more WAR from Hayes (27.2) than the Indians got from Franco (17.4) and from that entire trade altogether (22.0). As maligned as that trade is in the memory of many Phillies phans, the Phillies arguably got the better of that deal. Franco really blossomed in Texas while the others didn't amount to all that much. I've always thougth Hayes got a bad rap because 1) 5 for 1 was not a good look (Pope should have asked for a couple of filler guys from the Tribe to make things look more balanced out), 2) fan favorite Pete Rose rode him real hard both in the clubhouse and in the press in 1983, 3) he came across as something of a pretty boy which went over like a lead balloon in hardscrabble Philadelphia and 4) he was one of the Phillies central players during a time in which the organization was in retreat from its first true golden age (through no fault of his). But, he was defintely a good player. Might he be worthy of WOF consideration?
Interestingly, Jay Baller made a Phillies encore in 1992, the season after Hayes last played for us.
