I was able to get to the Pigs game this morning. It was a treat to watch Pivetta pitch. From what I could tell, even though his numbers are phenomenal so far he's still basically a two pitch pitcher. He lived off of his fastball... typically locating well early in the count with his fastball hitting 92 to 93. With two strikes he was hitting 95 and occasionally 96, or he was getting guys to chase his curve. From what I could tell he mixed in a few changeups. I appreciated his mound presence and what I perceived to be a competitive streak.
A couple of other notes... I'm not sure if he was just having a bad time of it today or if he typically exudes a bit of negativity in his body language... but he did not look comfortable today at all. One at bat in particular didn't look good. With one on and no outs, he attempted to bunt twice. He didn't look like he put the best effort forth. I hesitate saying that because I don't like to question effort since it's hard to tell... but that was what I saw. He wildly swung at a ball well out of the strike zone for strike three and sulked a bit on his way back to the dugout. Again, it's just one day and I liked a lot of what I saw last year, so I'll chalk it up to who wants to get up in the morning when you typically have a night shift job. haha
One other guy who always seems to flash while I get a chance to see him is Cam Perkins. I know he's considered second tier on a good day, but I see a versatile outfielder with a good arm who can hit. Today he hit a shot opposite field off the top of the fence for a triple, and then pulled a ball out of the park, and it wasn't cheap.
Overall, it was a fun day at the park. I'm really enjoying the talent at the AAA level for a change.
