I love all of the speculation and am a little excited, but I have to temper that with the fact that #8 overall picks are seldom difference makers and almost never superstars. The only Hall of Fame caliber player after drafted #8 is Todd Helton though Lindor is off to a great start to his career. Too early to tell about Kyle Freeland although he's off to an excellent start as well. There are some other star players drafted #8 such as Jay Bell, Jim Abbott, and Dick Ruthven, who didn't sign with the Twins but some other team drafted him #1 later (Appel also followed that route, but I think I want more out of this pick). There are a few other nice players such as Mike Leake, Todd Walker, and Pete Incavglia.
So this has me worried about drafting Smith. Not because I'm worried about the guys we have blocking him, but because to be an impact player as a first baseman, you have to be a great hitter. While no one expects Smith to be Todd Helton, it's interesting to note that very few 1B have been drafted #8, and Helton is the only one who ended up with as much as zero WAR. And Helton was very athletic, being a pitcher as well as a quarterback in college.
