Pinch running for Rupp would be an option but holding him at third would have put runners second and third with no outs. I guess a fast runner would have scored. Rupp looked like he was laboring rounding third.

I think the thing to do was to hold Rupp at third and put runners second and third with no outs. With no outs, don't send Rupp home unless it is clear he can make it. The ball got to the catcher on the relay well ahead of Rupp. Of course we don't know what happens if Rupp had been held on that play, but regardless, IMO, sending Rupp was a clear mistake.
