Well, no. I meant what I said, not emotionally. If Neris had blown this one, despite the fact that I think he might be our All-Star you have to change his role or send him down for a period of time. This was a big, big save opportunity, if he had blown it one has to consider Neris' confidence. I would have sent him to AAA for a couple weeks and let him "decompress". The truth is we are constantly cycling relievers, the fact that we would now be doing it with our best one really isnt a reason not to do it.
They need to make a move sooner rather than later. Despite the success of last year and this year, I still am not convinced that Neris is a closer, I just dont think he has the pitches. He is completely dependent on opponents swinging at his splitter, which is usually a ball. I like him as a setup man, I really do, and he has been hugely successful for almost a full season now, but keep in mind that was not in pressure situations like a playoff run. I think his "stuff" justifies being the 8th inning guy, but not the closer. How often do you think he would succeed in tonights situation? Facing the 1-2-3 hitters of a good hitting team that are "hot". I am surprised, happily, it worked, but I dont think it is more than 50-50 normally.
