From April 5 to 26, Phillies went 3-15 with a -50 RD. Aside from that, the Phillies are 33-16 +36 RD. Other than three weeks of atrocities, this team has actually been good.

Would it have all turned around anyway under Topper? Hard to tell though it did feel like a certain culture of complacency had set in under him, similar to under Danny Ozark--whom Topper reminded me of--many years ago.

You could ask the same thing of Girardi. He didn't seem like a very good manager, but strength-of-schedule and guys just coming around definitely helped Thomson. Was he partly responsible for the latter? Who knows.

It certainly doesn't feel like Mattingly has created a less complacent or more competitive evironment. He's pretty much playing the same cards. He just has an ace that Topper didn't. Even Sanchez had some bumps in April (a loss allowing four runs and that 12-hit, six-run outing the Phillies actually wound up winning).

Couple interesting tidbits on the radio last night:

Stott is still the only player to reach base 4 times in a game vs Scherzer in Max's 19 year career (Stott's rookie season vs the Mets)

Scherzer's first start was against the Phillies and Jamie Moyer in 2008. (Max gave up 5 runs, RBIs for Ryan Howard, Geoff Jenkins, Pedro Feliz, Chooch, and Moyer! Max would go on to allow 5 runs last night, RBIs for Harper and Bohm, plus Schwarber knocked in the inherited runner on when Max left)

Moyer's first start and first game was against the Phils and Steve Carlton in 1986.

Carlton's first start came in 1965.
